BMW/MINI FRM3 Module Repair Service

The Footwell Module, also known as "FRM3," may malfunction due to various factors, such as low voltage, a depleted battery, jump-starting the car, or errors during coding and programming. When this happens, a "Lighting System Warning" will be displayed on the Check Control screen.

This component is encased in a black plastic shell and connects to three large connectors. It's positioned behind the left side plastic trim in the driver's footwell area.

Indications of a malfunctioning Footwell Module include:

- Malfunctioning indicator lights
- Inoperative light switches
- Constantly active parking lights
- Windows not opening or closing
- Persistent headlights/tail lights after vehicle shutdown
- Unresponsive or erratically operating electric windows
- Failure to communicate with the FRM control unit using a diagnostic scanner

The Footwell Module (FRM3) is responsible for managing various vehicle functions, including:

- Headlights and tail lights
- Fog lights
- Front and rear interior lighting
- License plate illumination
- Electric window operation
- External mirrors
- Two stepper motor controllers (for adaptive headlights, AHL Module or RMSC/LMSC)

Typical error codes related to FRM issues are:

- Inability to communicate with the FRM unit, though other electronic control units will store fault codes.
- 497F – Message Error (status, reverse gear, 0x3B0) with the Diesel Electronics as the receiver and the Footwell Module as the transmitter
- A3B4 – Message (lighting condition) Incorrect, with the Footwell Module as the permanent transmitter
- A3C1 – Message (FRM foot space module) Incorrect, with COMBI as the receiver and the Footwell Module as the permanent transmitter.
- E72B and E72C, both indicating window errors
